Exactly a year and a month ago, I left my job at Archos and around July, I started to work again on a 2015 project called QuickDoc. QuickDoc was a simple Android app aiming at replacing Google Keep on my daily use with a rich text editor. At first, there was no will to get rid of Google. QuickDoc wasn't able to sync with NextCloud but only Google Drive. It was already in Open Source apps but well, at this time, Google wasn't scaring me. In July I started to work on NextCloud sync and on an electron version of QuickDoc. Refining, polishing the UI, adding features and... removing some useless hard to maintain ones. This is when QuickDoc became Carnet, with its first release on fdroid. Then came August, the time to make Carnet available as a NextCloud/ownCloud app, and to open https://carnet.live

Now, one year after I've left Archos, I still have lots of ideas for Carnet, even lots of features users would like to see among them:

  • Reminders
  • Drawing
  • Markdown support
  • Widget on Android
  • end-to-end encryption
  • GTK version
  • ....

And of course, all that come with maintenance, bug fix, etc.

Today I've tried to look at the possibility to create an IOS app. But I wondered. Should I do that ? Maintenance has a big cost and maintaining multiple versions of the app, even if they have a lot in common, can be quite hard, and I have to think of the future of the app.

The fact is donations to Carnet are not enough for a living, even if they are great ( about 100-120€ per month cf https://donation.carnet.live ). Time has come for me to look for a job, dedicated time to Carnet will have to be reduced a lot, but as I love this app (as a user and as a developer), don't worry, I will NOT leave it at all. This is not the question.

I'm more looking at a way either to stay full time on Carnet, or to build at least a small community around it. To do that, I will try to improve the documentation on how to contribute with low knowledge on dev, on git, etc.
