These lumps are worth stockpiling in large quantities because they are used to improve the efficiency of cookie-producing buildings, unlock late-game facilities, and activate spell effects. Despite the slow rate of Sugar Lump production, increasing your lump count is simple.
After earning your first billion cookies, a small, seed-like white circle will appear on your interface, directly beneath the Stats button. This is your Sugar Lump “plant,” which will sprout new lumps over time. These lumps can be harvested when they are mature or ripe, which produces different results.
A mature Sugar Lump can be harvested by clicking on it, but doing so only gives you a 50% chance of getting a lump. If the game hasn’t been saved after the harvest, you can retry a failed harvest an infinite number of times by refreshing cookie clicker’s browser tab. A ripened lump, on the other hand, will fall to the bottom of the screen and collect itself with 100% success.
Sugar Lumps are classified into five types, each with its own set of values, appearances, and special effects. A Normal Sugar Lump, for example, will give one lump when harvested, whereas a Bifurcated Sugar Lump has a 50% chance of giving two, Caramelized Sugar Lumps can give up to three, and Golden Sugar Lumps can give anywhere from two to seven while doubling your current amount of cookies. The spawn chances of the remaining four lumps are determined by chance, with the exception of the Meaty Sugar Lump, which can only appear during the Grandmapocalypse.
To say that these lumps grow gradually is an understatement. It takes about 20 real-world hours for a Sugar Lump to mature, or 43 hours to ripen, from a freshly “planted” Sugar Lump. This expansion will occur throughout the day, even when the game is closed.
