How To Choose The Right Rug Size For Your Living Room and other parts of home

There are many different rug sizes available, but how do you know which size will fit your space? Keep reading this post to learn how to measure for a rug in any room.

Choosing the right carpet is often not so easy, because depending on the colour, pattern and texture carpets affect the atmosphere of a room quite individually. Since carpet size, carpet shape and positioning are also crucial for a stylish ambience, we have dealt with this topic in detail.

Choosing the right carpet size

However, the question of the right carpet size cannot be answered in a blanket way, because before buying a carpet, the following aspects must be considered:

• What is the function of the room?

• How large is the room?

• Where and how is the furniture placed?

When choosing the size of the carpet, many rely on their sense of proportion. However, often too small carpets are bought, which get lost in the room and look anything but harmonious. But even a large carpet is not ideal for every room, because the room can quickly look cluttered and disproportionate.

If in doubt, it is best to choose a slightly larger carpet.

We give you tips on how to find the optimal carpet size.

To determine the right carpet size, it is advisable to measure the area that the carpet will cover beforehand. To do this, the furniture should be placed as it will later stand on the carpet. Now the width and length of the new carpet can be easily measured. The edge of the carpet can be marked on the floor with painter’s tape or newspaper, so that you get a good idea of the area that the new carpet would cover at this point.

Important: Test the painter’s tape on an inconspicuous area beforehand to make sure no residue is left behind!

Carpet sizes for the living room

A living room rug can be used to delineate living areas and combine seating furniture into a single unit. There are different types of rugs: round, square or rectangular. The width of the rug should be at least equal to the width of the sofa, but ideally it should be 15 to 25 centimetres wider than it on both sides.

A spacious sofa corner can be accentuated by a large, cosy rug - a shag rug provides a very soft surface and creates a perfect comfort zone. It makes sense to place all seating furniture completely on the carpet. You can find Iranian rugs in all sizes, but the most common are 8 x 10 and 7 x 10. When shopping around for an area rug, you’ll want one that’s large enough to fit the room you have in mind.

If the living room is a little smaller, the carpet should be proportionally smaller and only the front legs of the seating furniture should be placed on the carpet.

If the room is small, it is also advisable to place the carpet directly in front of the sofa. Only a few pieces of furniture, such as a coffee table, should be placed directly on the carpet.

How to place a carpet in the bedroom

Carpets in the bedroom add a cosy touch and keep your feet warm when you get up. The size of the rug depends primarily on the size of the bedroom, but the width of the bed is also crucial in choosing a rug.

You have a large bedroom and want to feel comfortable all around? Place the bed and nightstands completely on the bedroom rug. An evenly wide border on all sides of the bed looks particularly harmonious - the width of the nightstands, for example, can serve as a guide.

If you have a small bedroom, you should opt for a smaller rug. While the nightstands should be placed on the floor, the front legs of the bed can be placed on the carpet so that the bed is enclosed at its edge.

A nice alternative is runners and bed surrounds that are placed directly in front of the bed. They come in a variety of sizes and can be placed on all sides of the bed or just one. The size of the rug also depends on the size of the bed.

Carpet sizes for the dining room

A dining room rug should be chosen according to the size of the dining table to frame the dining area. Apartment-weave rugs, such as a sisal rug, are best for this purpose - they allow chairs to glide and provide easy access to the dining table.

For maximum comfort, all chairs in the dining set should fit on the rug. Therefore, dining tables for up to eight people should be placed on carpets with a size of at least 240x340 cm.

If the dining group consists of about 6 dining chairs, a carpet with dimensions 160x230 cm or 200x290 cm is enough. Again, it should be noted that the legs of the chairs shouldn’t be placed directly on the edge of the carpet.

If the shape of the table is reflected in the shape of the dining room carpet, a particularly harmonious, self-contained overall image of the dining room is conveyed. Here, a round dining table on a round rug looks particularly good.

Runner size

The size and shape of a hallway rug should be based on the particular dimensions of the room. However, the most important thing is that the entrance door can be opened without any problems. You can calculate the optimal size for your hallway rug with a simple rule of thumb before you buy it: Subtract about 1.20 meters from the length of the hallway.

Also, there should be about 15-20 cm of space on the sides so that the carpet doesn’t “rub” against anything. Avoid placing furniture on the hallway carpet to create a harmonious, inviting entrance. Sisal and jute carpets, as well as synthetic fiber carpets are ideal for a busy hallway.

Since most hallways are narrow and elongated, the runner is the number one choice for your entryway.

Typical sizes are 70x250cm or 8x300cm.

They’re usually suitable for narrow kitchens as well.

You can also string several runners together if you have a particularly long hallway, so that the room doesn’t look even longer. Pay attention here and choose uniform models.

If your apartment has a particularly spacious entrance, you can also choose other carpet shapes. For example, round or square rugs are popular for a larger hallway. However, the same rule applies here: Don’t put furniture on the carpet and always keep the distance from the front door and sides.
