Refractive surgery for astigmatism

Refractive surgery is performed to correct refractive errors such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), presbyopia (age related nearsightedness) and astigmatism (blurred vision in all directions). Refractive surgery improves the vision by reshaping the curvature of the cornea of the eye that is responsible for refraction in the eye. When the shape of the layer of the cornea or lens gets uneven, the person has to suffer from refractive error. Astigmatism is very common refractive error that makes things look blurry or distorted.  Initially, an ophthalmologist prescribes eyeglasses or contact lenses or sometimes he can suggest you for refractive surgery to treat astigmatism.

Option of refractive surgery for astigmatism

• Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK):- In this surgery, the outer layer of cells on the cornea is removed and then cornea is reshaped using laser. This surgery is suitable for dry eyes or thin cornea.
• Laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis (LASIK):- During this surgery, the cornea of your eye is reshaped through thin flap. This surgery might be a good option when you have thick cornea issues.
• Small Incision Lenticule Extraction (SMILE):- During this surgery, a laser is used to sculpt a disc-shaped piece of cornea below the surface of the eye and then the disc is removed through a small made incision in the cornea. This surgery is also a good choice for mild nearsightedness and astigmatism.
