Corneal transplant is a surgical operation performed to remove damaged cornea and implant healthy cornea from a donor. Cornea is a transparent dome shaped front part of the eye that is responsible for refraction in the eye as well as protects our eye from germs, dirt and dust particles and the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun. The cornea and the lens together refract or bend the light entering the eye and then focus on the retina to give us clear vision. But sometimes, cornea get damaged due to various reasons like scratches or scrapes on the surface of the cornea, getting chemical into the eye, contact lens issues like poor fit or sensitivity to contact lens, rubbing eye on getting sand or dust into the eye, ultraviolet injuries, etc. corneal transplant is also known as keratoplasty.
What are the types of corneal transplant?
- Full thickness keratoplasty: - During this surgery, your entire cornea is replaced on damaging the front and inner corneal layers of the cornea. Your diseased or damaged cornea is removed and the clear donor cornea is sewn into place.
- Partial thickness keratoplasty: - This surgery is performed when there is damaged in the front and the middle layer of the cornea.
- Endothelial keratoplasty: - During this surgery, endothelial (innermost layer of the cornea) is replaced with healthy one from a donor.
