What is it?
RocketBoom is a social media website that offers federated, free, open-source alternatives to services like Twitter, Slack and Medium.
Federation
When a service or website is capable of federation, it does not matter if the sender and recipient(s) have an account with the same service or website. A federated service is capable of communicating with other federated services across the internet -- just like e-mail!
When you sign up for an account using Pleroma, our Twitter alternative, you will receive an account address based on your username that can be used to exchange messages, pictures, videos, etc. with other websites and people from all over the world. Not only that, but you will see publicly posted messages from tens of thousands of people who may or may not have RocketBoom accounts.
When you sign up for an account using Plume, our Medium alternative, you will likewise receive an account address based on your username that your friends and family can add or follow using their federated service of choice.
This means it does not matter how you communicate either: your friends could be posting quippy one-liners and memes on a microblog and receive your long-form essays or blog posts in their feeds.
Free and Open-Source
Free as in free-to-use and freedom. We offer services that enable you to do what you want without compromising your privacy, security or integrity. There are no fees, ads or user commodification.
We use open-source software because the code is released publicly and can be audited and improved upon by hundreds, if not thousands, of independent people -- including ourselves.
